Life at home was hard during the war, there were bombs dropping and people dying.

However, the war threat didn't stop some of us from having fun and living normal life.

But we still wanted to leave the violence and natural disasters behind.

And we wanted get the freedom and jobs America had to offer.

For most of us, getting the tickets was the easy part. Getting to America was the hard part.

We had to travel in a small, crammed space.

The trip to America was long and sometimes we would play games to pass the time.

The small room caused sickness to spread quickly. Some even died, but I got lucky and didn't get sick.

Medical inspectors came aboard to give exams. If we didn't pass, we were sent back.

I was sent to Ellis Island along with some others to be examined again.

At Ellis Island they examined me again, but soon I was back with my family.

They Statue of Liberty was not far away. It was a big statue I'd never seen before. It symbolized freedom.

We finally made it to New York, and we got off and started to find jobs and homes.

The rooms were small but cheap, and we had just enough space for our stuff.

We had to work and sell things we brought for money.

We needed the money to buy ourself a home that would work for us.

We finally bought a home and we had a great life in the city of New York.
