Reverend Fredrich Schmid led 34 German families to mid-Michigan in 1833. The Germans began to settle the Ann Arbor area and the Saginaw River valley, forming towns like Frankenmuth.
These immigrants left Germany because ofcrop failures and a revolution in 1848.
