German Unification

By Ryan Ware

STEPS & EVENTS

  • The Danish War
  • The forming of the German Confederacy
  • The Austro-Prussian War
  • The Franco-Prussian War

THE DANISH WAR

  • Fought between Great Dane and Prussia and Austria,
  • whom the latter two were allies due to a common enemy.
  • Despite their alliance, Prussia and Austria rivaled eachother,
  • leading to the Austro-Prussian War

FORMING OF THE GERMAN CONFEDERACY

  • The German Confederacy was a loose group of German states;
  • 39 of them to be exact. It was designed to act as a buffer between
  • Prussia and Austria, but it was considered weak and ineffective.
  • The G. C. wasn't worthless, though, for it laid out the foundation
  • of the idea of the German empire. It was dissolved in 1867.

THE AUSTRO-PRUSSIAN WAR

  • The Austro-Prussian war was fought, obviously enough,
  • between Austria and Prussia, who had France as an ally.
  • This war enlarged Prussia's and Austria's rivalry, leading to
  • a divided Germany, half being controlled by Prussia and
  • the other Austria.

THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR

  • The Franco-Prussian War was fought between France and Prussia,
  • their alliance dissolved after Otto Von Bismarck failed to keep his
  • promise of land to Napoleon Bonaparte, much like Prussia's
  • alliance with Austria after the Danish War. This led to France's
  • defeat and the creation of the German states.

OTTO VON BISMARCK

  • Otto Von Bismarck was the general of Prussia
  • until in 1862, when he was appointed prime minister.
  • Bismarck played the main role in Germany's unification
  • because he was the one that led the German Confederation
  • as a leader and persuaded the southern German states (which

OTTO VON BISMARCK (CONT'D)

  • were Austrian) to join the northern (Prussian) states,
  • making a unified Germany. As his time as a general, he led
  • the Prussian armies in the Danish war and the Austro- and
  • Franco-Prussian wars. He was born 4/1/1815 and died 7/30/1898.

FRANZ JOSEPH I

  • Joseph I was the rival of Otto Von Bismarck,
  • country-wise, at least, because Franz was the ruler
  • of Austria. He aided Prussia in the Danish war but
  • opposed them in the Austro-Prussian war. He also
  • represented Austria in the German confederacy.

FRANZ JOSEPH I (CONT'D)

  • All of these events ultimately led to the unification
  • of Germany, restating the fact that he played a key role.
  • He was born on 12/18/1863 and died 6/28/1914.

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE

  • Napoleon was important in the unification
  • of Germany for two reasons: one is the fact he
  • started nationalism in the first place, which is what
  • started German unification in the first place. The
  • second reason is that he battled Austria with Prussia

NAPOLEON BONAPARTE (CONT'D)

  • as an ally in the Austro-Prussian war, which
  • led to the Franco-Prussian war, in which France
  • battled Prussia, which led to the German states.
  • He was born 8/15/1769 and died 5/5/1821.
