PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

WHAT IS IT?

  • Thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth
  • Energy that determines the temperature of matter

PROS OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

  • Almost emission free
  • Zero carbon
  • Scrubs out sulfur
  • No fuel required to transport
  • Virtually limitless supply

CONS OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

  • Sites are location- specific
  • Sites are far from population
  • Uses water
  • Sulfur dioxide and silica emissions

COAL ENERGY

WHAT IS IT?

  • A combustible black or dark brown rock
  • Consists of carbonized plant matter

PROS OF COAL ENERGY

  • Abundant supply
  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Continuous power
  • Can be converted to liquid or gas
  • Low capital investment

CONS OF COAL ENERGY

  • Nonrenewable
  • Contains the most CO2
  • Largest contributor to global warming
  • Severe health and safety impacts when mining
  • Not carbon free
