FOUNDERS

  • James Edward Oglethorpe founded the Province of Georgia
  • Over 500 years ago, The Province of Georgia was named to honor King George II

WHY WAS GEORGIA FOUNDED?

  • Georgia was founded in 1732 to serve as a place where debters could start new
  • It also served to stop Spanish expansion from Florida

WHO LIVED IN THE GEORGIA COLONY

  • Many refugees and debtors lived in the Georgia colony
  • Georgia had the highest population of slaves working on crops

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

  • The climate was very warm, which meant the summers were prone to disease spreading
  • Georgia was in a hilly coastal plain with lots of forests

ECONOMY

  • The Georgia colony export agriculture such as corn and tobacco
  • Other settlers made a living by trading with the natives or working on various trades such as shoemaker

RELIGION

  • Georgia was not dominated by any religion in particular
  • This lead to the growth of Anglican and baptist churches

POLITICS

  • Georgia originally started as a type of utopia where people could survive by their own work and the government would be ruled by 21 trustees
  • 20 years later, the people were given a chance at a representative government
