PRESENTATION OUTLINE
HOW TO SUBTRACT MIXED NUMBERS
STORY LINE
Lisa had 6 1/3 metres of rope to build a swing for her cousin. The rope was too long and Lisa worked out she needed 2 2/7 metres shorter than 6 1/3. Lisa will explain how she finds the answer of how much rope she needs for her cousins swing.
First we need to change the two denominators to the same number so we can work out the sum.
We will now times the 3 and the 1 in 6 1/3 by 7 to equal 21 and the 7 and the 2 in 2 2/7 by 3 to equal 21 because both 3 and 7 both the denominators go into 21 and because whatever you do to the denominator you need to do to the numerator.
The fractions now have the same denominator, 6 1/3 now becomes 6 7/21 and 2 2/7 becomes 2 6/21
6 7/21 - 2 6/21
First we need to subtract 2 from 6, this will give us 4, then we subtract 6 from 7 giving us 1
Great work we hope you now know how to subtract mixed fractions
