GEOLOGIC TIME SCALE

BY DEVON LALLENSACK

Precambrian Era
This era started 4.6 billion years ago and went until 540 million years ago.
The Precambrian Era began when the Earth first devoloped 4.6 billion years ago. All life that existed was under water and not very complex. These creatures formed when chemicals reacted by eachother. The climate was very hot. There were many meteors falling. There was no place to sustain life other than under water. Under water didn't hold very complex organisms either. In the first great extinction event, stromatolites and 70% of the dominant Precambrian flora and fauna take a hit

This is an anemone that existed in the era. It existed In a class of cnidarians.

This is a sponge that was common in the era. They had quite a spongy texture. ;)

This is an Anomalocaris, the first great predatory animal of the Precambrian.

This is a picture of a early jellyfish. Or a cnidarian.

Paleozoic Era
540 mya- 245 mya
In this era the earth cooled down, it cooled down to a period of not as many volcanic eruptions. There were now more complex figures. Later in the era there was sign of vegetation. The mass extinction of this era was major climate change(ice age) and a few major volcanic eruptions.

This is a trilobite. This is one of the first organisms with very good sight and a protective shell. It mainly sticks around by the water.

This is an Archaeopteris, it was a plant in the Precambrian that dominated the era.

Crassigyrinus, a semi-aquatic tetrapod from the Devonian period.

This is a crinoid which is an echinoderm. It lives underwater and has many suction arms.

Mesozoic Era
245 mya- 65 mya
This era also called the age of the reptiles. Many dinosaurs roamed the planet during this era. The continents were almost to where they are today but not quite there yet. The mass extinction that supposedly wiped out many dinosaurs was a big meteor storm.

This is a Tyrannosaurus rex. It was the largest predator of it's time.

This is a triceratops it was a three horned herbivore. It's main predator was the Tyrannosaurus rex. It used the three horns for protection.

This is a pterodactyl. It was one of the first animals to fly.

This is a picture of climate change and meteors that sent most of the world into a fiery death place. This caused the mass extinction.

Cenozoic Era
65 mya- present day
This is the age of the mammals. There was an ice age that helped the mammals adapt to the cold. Mass extinctions are from over hunting.

This is a wooly mammoth, it could survive cold temperatures because of it's adaptations.

This is a saber toothed tiger. It was a predator to many animals. It went extinct from hunting.

Humans are the most complex of creatures on the planet. We have the most intelligent minds. Our brain is our adaptation.

Many animals of the early Cenozoic era were hunted down by natives. This was the main mass extinction of the Cenozoic era.
