Human rights violations overview

  • The Congolese Genocide has killed five million people so far.
  • This has been the single most number of deaths in a conflict since WWII.
  • In the Democratic Republic of Congo, every minute a women or girl is raped.
  • There are reports of cannibalism in the northern areas of the DRC.
  • The Congolese rebels recruit children into the war and destroy villages.

  • Perpetrators-The Lord's Resistance Army and Congolese military.
  • Victims-Congolese citizens, Hutus and Tutsis.
  • Bystanders-Neighboring countries and governments.
  • Rescuers-United Nations.

  • Every minute, a women in the Congo is raped.
  • There have been over five million deaths since the conflict began.
  • An estimated 3.4 million people have been displaced from their homes.
  • 2 million people have sought refuge in neighboring countries.
  • Children have accounted for 47% of all the deaths occurring.

Enduring understanding

  • Despite the high death toll, not many people know about the genocide.
  • Because of this conflict many human rights are being violated.
  • We can't make the world a better place if we don't address these conflicts.
  • If we raise awareness it can lead to action and a solution. 
  • The rebels often kill and rape many people, which is violating their rights
