PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE DISORDER

  • The names of the people in our group are Gavin, Dayvon'te, and Damien
  • The name of the genetic disorder we researched is Down Syndrome.
  • Other names of Down syndrome are 47,XX,+21 , 47,XY,+21 , Down's syndrome , Trisomy 21 , and trisomy G.

WHAT CHROMOSOME IS AFFECTED

  • Chromosome 21 is affected in Down syndrome
  • The cause of this disorder is having an additional chromosome 21 or ,less commonly, when a part of chromosome 21 attaches to another chromosome during the production of reproductive cells
  • Down Syndrome is a mutated disorder.

PHYSICAL SIGNS

  • Some common physical signs of Down syndrome are:
  • Decreased or poor muscle tone.
  • Flattened facial profile and nose.
  • Small head, ears, and mouth.
  • Wide,short hands with short fingers, ect.

INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL SYMPTOMS/CHALLENGES

  • Short attention span
  • Poor judgement
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Slow learning
  • Delayed language and speech development

SPECIFIC POPULATIONS THAT ARE AFFECTED

  • Yes, the older you are the more likely you are to have a child with Down syndrome.
  • The average life expectancy for Down syndrome is 60 years.

TREATMENTS

  • Down syndrome is diagnosed at birth, or by taking a test which tells you before birth.
  • Early intervention programs, teams of therapists, and special educated help treat certain needs.
  • There is no actual cure but physical excesses and support groups help the diagnosed patient stay under control.
