Chapter 6-7

  • The flood is the greatest catastrophe mentioned in the Bible. There is more time spent on the flood than creation. The flood marks the end of the old world and the beginning of the new world. Perhaps our world is just a shadow of the original world that God had created. The civilizations had rejected God and become corrupt.

2 Peter 2:4-5 (NIV)

  • • 2 Peter 2:4-5 (NIV) 4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;

Good things about the flood

  • 11 Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

  • • Genesis 15:16 (NIV)
  • • Revelation 14:15-18 (NIV)
  • Matthew 24:37-39 (NIV)

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)

  • 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Judgement

  • On one hand God has judgment but on the other he has punishment. He does not want to destroy men but wants them to come to repentance. God helped Noah to be a witness on earth. Noah was used to provide a place for those who did believe in the Lord. For 120 years Noah is working on the Ark

LifeSpan

  • Theories on 120 years 1. Lifespan that God has set 2. The thought is that 120 years is the time that it took Noah to build the Ark.

ARK

  • A cubit is the distance between an adult’s elbow and tip of the finger, no less than 18-inches [45.72 centimeters]. Most Hebrew scholars believe the cubit to have been no less than 18 inches long [45.72 centimeters]. This means that the Ark would have been at least 450 feet long [137.16 meters], 75 feet wide [22.86 meters] and 45 feet high [13.716 meters].

Ark

  • Noah’s Ark was said to have been the largest sea-going vessel ever built until the late nineteenth century when giant metal ships were first constructed. Its length to width ratio of six to one provided excellent stability on the high seas. In fact, modern shipbuilders say it would have been almost impossible to turn over. In every way, it was admirably suited for riding out the tremendous storms in the year of the flood.

Ark

  • The Ark was only 60% occupied. However, God did provided if anybody else had listened and came to repentance. The Ark is representative of Jesus Christ. To be in Christ is to be safe from Judgment, to be outside of the Ark/Christ means to face destruction. 7 Days after the people and the animals enter the Ark comes the flood.

Forces Involved

  • 2 Forces of nature involved in flood 1. The picture that we get from the Bible is that the waters came below, springs of the deep. 2. Flood Gates of heaven. God’s truth is not determined by the majority. Antedilvuvian-before the flood.

What do I learn ?

  • God is true to his word Obedience is essential to our relationship with God All lifeform was corrupted.
  • Obedience is essential to our relationship with God
  • All life-form was corrupted.

How can I apply what I learned to my life

  • How has God showed his faithfulness to you recently?
  • Why is it so hard to obey God all the time?
