ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

HOW DID WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE CHANGE ROLES FOR WOMEN IN THE 1920S?

Untitled Slide

On the Election Day of 1920, millions of women in America voted for the first time. On August 26, 1920, the 19th amendment was finally added to the constitution, declaring that women deserve the same rights as citizens as men.

The 15th amendment granted the right to vote to African American men and feminists were in disbelief that a group of people that were enslaved for hundreds of years could vote before women could. Feminists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton refused to support the 15th amendment because it excluded women. This pushed women to fight for voting rights.

Women's Suffrage was up to each state. Territories could not become a state unless they had a population of 60,000 so some governors would allow women to vote. Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho were territories that gave women the right to vote.

Another political effect that the Women's Suffrage Movement had on society dealt with World War I. The U.S.'s involvement in the war needed the support of women. When America entered the war, the woman suffrage amendment was submitted to the House of Representatives. The amendment was passed by Congress and was ratified by the remaining 36 states.

The Women's Suffrage Movement gave women many opportunities to achieve gender equality. Even though they were still outnumbered by men, women began to attend college so that they could prepare themselves for careers that were dominated by men.

The women's suffrage movement was a step towards complete gender equality by creating higher standards for women. More women began to enter the workplace in previously male dominated professions such as law, medicine, clergy, and corporate.

The Women's Suffrage Movement allowed women to contribute to the economy more than they had before. As women's education improved, so did their careers. That meant women were being paid more; however, it was not nearly as much as men were paid. Nevertheless, it was still an improvement in achieving a more equal society.

The 1920s brought on an extreme change in gender roles and the Women's suffrage movement exemplified the new era of feminism that became popular during the Jazz Era.
