BOYLE'S LAW

ROBERT DOYLE
•engaged with Robert Hooke and they devised the vacuum chamber
•Born 27 January 1627 in County Waterford in south-east Ireland
•He was educated at Eton
•Travelled and studied in Europe
•Returned in 1644, now interested in science, and built a laboratory in Dorset
•refused presidency of the Royal Society, the oath violated his religious principles

Boyle's law was first discovered in 1662

REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS

  • Pushing in the plunger of a plugged-up syringe decreases the volume of air trapped under the plunger.
  • pressure decreases as fish are brought to the surface, so the volume of gases in their bodies increases
  • Pressure from weight of water decreases with depth & volume of the bubbles increases as they rise
  • Filling your tires with an air tank.
  • When you fly in an airplane and your ears pop
