PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GREENHOUSE GASES

MICHAEL SMITH

I can explore and design a plan to reduce human impact on the environment. This plan will include factors that affect global warming, greenhouse gases, and earth's natural resources.

NONRENEWABLE

  • Sources were supplies are limited
  • Petroleum
  • Coal
  • Natural gas/ Propane
  • Uranium

RENEWABLE

  • Sources that replenish in a short time
  • Biomass
  • Hydropower
  • Geothermal
  • Wind/ Solar

GREENHOUSE GASES- gases trapped in earth's atmosphere (ex. CO2)
GLOBAL WARMING- gradual heating of earth's surface(ex. Water rising)

As a nation, the USA uses more non-renewable resources. Mainly, petroleum(37%), coal(22.6%), and natural gas(23.5%).

PETROLEUM

  • Transportation : Cars Busses
  • Manufacturing: Factories

COAL

  • Electricity: Powering houses
  • Manufacturing: Factories

NATURAL GAS

  • Heating: Controlling Temp.
  • Manufacturing: Factories
  • Electricity: Powering homes

URANIUM
-Electricity: Powering homes

PROPANE
-Manufacturing: Factories
-Heating: Controlling temp.

BIOMASS
-Heating: Controlling temp.
-Electricity: Powering

-Transportation: Cars Bus

HYDROPOWER
-Electricity- Powering

GEOTHERMAL
-Heating: Controlling temp.
-Electricity: Powering

WIND
-Electricity: Powering

SOLAR
-Light: That pretty bulb
-Heating: Control Temp.
-Electricity: Power

The burning of fossil fuels create CO2. CO2 is a gas. This gas will go into the atmosphere and thus creating global warming

Global warming occurs as emissions come from burning fossil fuels. These emissions go to the atmosphere blocking sun rays from leaving the atmosphere thus creating global warming.

WHAT I CAN DO

  • Use less iPad battery
  • Carpooling with friends
  • Turn off excess lights
  • Planting a garden
  • Being more active

WHAT COMMUNITIES CAN DO

  • City/Community Garden
  • Less business waste
  • Metro System
  • "Shut down & Come out"
  • Utilize rivers and water

EXPLANATION
-Business waste: Companies can use less materials like wood
-Metro System- A way for cheap in city transportation
-"Shut down & Come out": a day were everything closes and everyone comes together.
-Utilize rivers and water: Make a dam for hydropower.

We, as part,of the greatest country in the world, can:
1. Produce laws for fuel efficient cars
2. Mandate solar panels on government/public buildings

FUEL EFFICIENT CARS
-To reduce emissions we can make a law saying that all cars need to get at least 40 miles per gallon of gas. This creates less gas usage thus limiting emissions

SOLAR POWER
As another way to limit emissions we can mandate solar power on official building. Thus creates less need for a power plant that uses coal for power.
