Who WAs GalvaNI?

  • University of Bologna
  • Anatomist, Physicist, and Biologist
  • Alessandro Volta
Alessandro Volta- Worked at University of Bologna (1780) as an anatomist, physicist, biologist.

FROG LEGS

A charge applied to the spinal cord of a frog could generate muscular spasms throughout its body. Charges could make frog legs jump even if the legs were no longer attached to a frog. While cutting a frog leg, Galvani's steel scalpel touched a brass hook that was holding the leg in place. The leg twitched. Further experiments confirmed this effect, and Galvani was convinced that he was seeing the effects of what he called animal electricity, the life force within the muscles of the frog.

Creation of "bioelectrogenesis" and Galvanism

Bioelectrogenesis is the generation of electricity by living organisms, a phenomenon that belongs to the science of electrophysiology. The nerve impulse is a bioelectric event.

Galvanism-the contraction of a muscle that is stimulated by an electric current.

FRANKENSTEIN

  • For Giving Life
  • Modern Electricity
  • Modern Technology
In the prologue, Mary Shelley talked about how Galvanism, and the idea of the time, that perhaps science could one day be used to reanimate corpses. This inspired her to write Frankenstein.
