  • Heart=shaped face
  • Two Ears

Heart-Shaped Face

  • Acts as a satellite dish
  • Collects sounds from below the owl
  • Helps when hunting
  • They use sound over sight when hunting

Ears

  • Two different tone ranges
  • Also helps with hunting

Wings

  • The edge of the wings are soft
  • The softness helps muffle the flapping noise
  • The wings help the bird stay quiet while hunting

Habitat

  • Collapsed lava tubes

Feeding preferences

  • Rats
  • Mice
  • Insects
  • Other birds
  • Reptiles

Feeding preferences

  • Eat prey whole
  • Then they digest the soft tissues
  • And regurgitate the inedible parts 
  • Bones, fur, scales, and feathers
  • Regurgitated material is called a pellet

Extinction

Galapagos barn owls may become extinct from tourists
