PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Fringe Benefits
I started out looking for books to represent under represented or marginalized populations of my school population. To complete this population I collaborated with my school counselor and asked her to read some of the books.
At first I called this living on the fringe, but one afternoon when I was talking to the counselor and we were discussing some of our students and the conversation turned to my childhood. I had a great childhood i shared, but my dad did die in car wreck when I was five. Then she asked did your mom remarry? I said yes, but he was an alcoholic.
It was at that time I realized Everyone has some element in their lives their lives that sets them apart, so I decided to call my culture study Fringe Benefits to acknowledge all we can learn from the characters in the books and in life who have some elements in their lives that set them apart in some way.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green examines the idea of what is means to be terminally ill.
“I believe the universe wants to be noticed. I think the universe is inprobably biased toward the consciousness, that it rewards intelligence in part because the universe enjoys its elegance being observed. And who am I, living in the middle of history, to tell the universe that it-or my observation of it-is temporary?”
― John Green, The Fault in Our Stars
“You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything. . . affects everything.”
― Jay Asher, Thirteen Reasons Why
“He knew that we take what the universe gives us, and we either get the most out of it or we don’t, but in the end we all go out the same way.”
― Chris Crutcher, Whale Talk

This spring as I was working on this unit, I had the opportunity to reread the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I chose to feature in this unit because of the secret and what Brian reveals he knows about his mom and his parents' divorce.
“Patience, he thought. So much of this was patience - waiting, and thinking and doing things right. So much of all this, so much of all living was patience and thinking.”
― Gary Paulsen, Hatchet
“Kinder than is necessary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed.”
― R.J. Palacio, Wonder

“Life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community.”
― Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

Perhaps in the end, these books bring into focus the fact that this life can be difficult.
Everyone has something to learn.
Everyone has struggles to overcome.
Everyone is an individual.
Everyone is part of a group.
Everyone has something to contribute to this world.
