THE cause & EFFECT OF CLASSICAL CONFUCIANISM IN CHINA

THESIS

  • From circa 400 BC to 2014 AD, Classical Confucianism
  • greatly changed modern and ancient China's
  • ethical, political, and social behavior because of the way that
  • Confucius [551 - 479 BC] taught people to live.

RESEARCH PROCESS

  • I used the Discovery Service on the CHS web page.
  • I would then search Confucianism or Confucius.
  • I thought this would be hard, but it was very easy.
  • A challenge was including the 10 parenthetical citations.
  • Another challenge was finding relevant information.

ORIGIN

  • Created circa 400 BC
  • Created in China
  • Created by Confucius & Mencius
  • Confucius lived 551 BC-479 BC (72 years old)
  • Mencius made Confucianism into philosophy

ETHICAL

  • Confucius wanted order & organization on the earth
  • Five Constants: "li" (courtesy), "ren" (humane), yi" (relevant), "zhi" (smart), "xin" (rely)
  • Five Relations: parent-child, ruler-subject, husband-wife, sibling-sibling, friend-friend
  • Confucius stressed that a leader should be kind and warmhearted
  • Confucius wanted followers to behave properly and act humane

POLITICAL

  • Imperial court separate from administration
  • Administration in China was managed by elites, not nobles
  • 58 AD, Chinese leaders made schools honor Confucius
  • Anti-Monopoly Law made to uphold Confucian ideas
  • Confucius believed in education for progression

SOCIAL

  • Confucius taught filial piety (respect for elders) & deference (submission)
  • Confucius taught duty, loyalty, respect, responsibility
  • Honest behavior & understanding relationships could create order
  • Confucius taught that family always came first
  • Children should respect parents, parents should love children

  • September 28th is Confucius' birthday.
  • Confucius' real name is Kong Qiu.
  • Confucius taught small noble children about his thoughts.
  • Confucius was born in the state of Lu, in China in the Zhou Dynasty
  • Confucius had three kids (one boy, two girls).
