It was a non violent protest.

In September 1961 the interstate Commerce Commission prohibited segregation in public transportation.

They were protesting against segregation.
Against racism and violence specifically in public transport.
They were testing a descicion by the Supreme Court of Virginia that stated: segregation in public transportation was unconstitutional.

It first started in 1947 with the CORE organization.
May 4-17,1961 (SNCC).
There were very important rides on the 14 and the 24 of May.

The original route was:
Washington - Louisiana (to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the courts decision on segregation in schools.
They experienced violence in:
South Carolina, and mainly Alabama.
