WHAT

WHAT

  • Type of protest: Sit In.
  • Act: Civil Disobedience .
  • It was a non violent protest.

HOW

  • Gained international attention.
  • In September 1961 the interstate Commerce Commission prohibited segregation in public transportation.

WHY

  • They were protesting against segregation.
  • Against racism and violence specifically in public transport.
  • They were testing a descicion by the Supreme Court of Virginia that stated: segregation in public transportation was unconstitutional.

WHEN

WHEN

  • It first started in 1947 with the CORE organization.
  • May 4-17,1961 (SNCC).
  • There were very important rides on the 14 and the 24 of May.

WHERE

WHERE

  • The original route was:
  • Washington - Louisiana (to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the courts decision on segregation in schools.
  • They experienced violence in:
  • South Carolina, and mainly Alabama.
