BIOGRAPHY

  • Born Nov. 21, 1834 in Nieder Saulheim, Hesse
  • Worked in lumber almost his entire life
  • Immigrated into the U.S. at 18 from Germany
  • Began his life in lumber as a sawmill worker
  • He eventually bought a lumber company

BIOGRAPHY

  • 1872- organized the Mississippi River Boom and Logging Co.
  • Controlled all logs milled on the Mississippi
  • 1900- buys 900,000 acres of land from James J. Hill.
  • Uses the land to start Weyerhäuser Timber Company
  • Eventually they accumulate over 2 million acres.

BIOGRAPHY

  • Was president of 16 lumber companies
  • Was also a major shareholder in others
  • Dies on April 4,1914 in Pasadena, CA

LEGACY

  • Weyerhäuser Co. is still a leader in lumber sales
  • Unified most of the U.S. lumber industry.
  • 8th richest American of all time with a net worth of $72.2 billion
  • Inducted into the U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1978

SIGNIFICANCE

  • Created a syndicate that managed many sawmills and lumber yards
  • Showed that lumber could be cut, processed and sold by the same people
  • Consolidated much of the U.S. Lumber industry into a single entity
  • Helped create the worlds largest producer of lumber.
