RIDING WITH A GROUP

COMMUNICATION IS KEY
Riding with a group is a lot of fun! It can also be dangerous. Using verbal prompts and hand signals helps with communication and safety on the road.

SAYING "ON YOUR LEFT"

ALERTS THE RIDER YOU ARE ABOUT TO PASS.
This signal allows a rider to know they're about to be passed from behind. It is not to be rude and brag about passing you, it is used so that you are not surprised by a rider suddenly showing up on your left side.

DOWNWARD POINT

ALERTS RIDERS TO ROAD OBSTRUCTIONS.
Potholes rocks sticks and other obstructions in the road should be pointed out. This gives the rider behind them a chance to swerve.

DOWNWARD OPEN PALM

THIS IS THE UNIVERSAL STOPPING SIGNAL.
The signal allows riders behind you to know that you are about to slow down or stop.

EXTENDED RIGHT ARM

THIS SIGNAL MEANS A RIGHT TURN.
This signal shows a right turn. An alternate right turn signal is shown by holding up the left arm with a hand pointing upward making a right angle.

EXTENDED LEFT ARM

THIS RIDER IS GOING TO TURN LEFT.
Use this signal when turning left.

THE VERBAL SIGNAL "CLEAR"

WE DO NOT USE THIS. CHECK FOR CLEAR ROADWAYS YOURSELF.
Although clear is used by some people to show that intersecting roadway has no traffic, our club does not use this signal. It is each individual rider's responsibility to check for the clear roadway themselves. Never trust a rider ahead of you when they signal the roadway is clear.

SAYING "CAR UP" OR "CAR BACK"

ALERTS THE RIDER TO APPROACHING CARS.
When you hear someone yell car back or car up, make sure you are to the far left side of the road. You should repeat the signal so riders ahead of you are also warned of traffic approaching.
