PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FLUORINE

THE HISTORY

  • The element fluorine was discovered in 1886 by Henri Moissan.
  • The element had already been made in 1670 by George gore.
  • However the fluorine reacted with hydrogen and exploded.
  • Then in 1886 Moissan was the first to isolate fluorine.
  • He did this by using an apparatus constructed from platinum.

THE NAME

  • The word comes from the Latin word "fluere".
  • This means "to flow"

PROPERTIES

MORE PROPERTIES

  • Fluorine reacts with almost all elements.
  • It appears as a pale yellow gas.
  • Fluorine is very poisonous.
  • The boiling point of fluorine is -188 oC.
  • Also the melting point is -219 oC.

USES

  • Fluorine can be added to water to prevent tooth decay.
  • In small dosages it is safe for this.
  • However in large dosages it is poisonous.
  • People have died from drinking to much fluorine.
  • Also used for welding metals.

ANOTHER USE

  • Fluorine is also used in nonstick pans.
  • Usually this doesn't cause any problems.
  • However when the pan heats up sometimes toxins can be released.

SOURCES

  • Typically fluorine is not found in nature.
  • But, some has been found in calcium fluoride minerals.
  • These minerals were found by German chemists.
  • It can also be found as fluoride ions in the earths crust.

OTHER INFO

  • It is the most reactive and electronegative of all elements.
  • It is the lightest of the halogens.
  • It is the 13th most common element in the crust.
