Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly.

Fluency is important because it provides a bridge between word recognition and
comprehension. It also allows students to understand what they read.

help students become more fluent readers by

  • model fluent reading, then have students reread that text
  • have students repeadedly read passages aloud

students can read aloud repeatedly by

  • student-adult reading
  • choral reading
  • tape-assisted reading
  • partner reading
  • readers theatre

monitor students progress in fluency

  • to make sure the students are making appropriate progress
  • to help you determine the effectiveness of your instruction
  • fluency growth reflected in graphs can motivate the students
