PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FLUENCY

Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly

Fluency bridges the gap between word recognition and comprehension

Fluency develops over time and through practice

With fluency, students are able to extract meaning and create connections

Fluency changes based on what the student is reading, their familiarity with words and the amount of their practice with reading text

Reading fluency can be developed by modeling fluent reading and by having students engage in repeated oral reading

Fluency should be practiced with independent level text where they miss no more than 1 of 20 words

READ ALOUD STRATEGIES INCLUDE:

  • Student-adult reading
  • Choral reading
  • Tape assisted reading
  • Partner reading
  • Readers’ theater
