KEEPING FLOWERS FRESH WITH HAIRSPRAY!

QUESTION:

DOES HAIRSPRAY KEEP FLOWERS FRESH?

Hypothesis:
If hairspray is applied to a bouquet of white roses, then the flowers will stay fresh longer because the hairspray keeps the petals firm.

CONTROL GROUP: THE FLOWER GROUP THAT DID NOT GET SPRAYED WITH HAIRSPRAY

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP: THE FLOWER GROUP THAT DID GET SPRAYED WITH HAIRSPRAY

CONTROLLED VARIABLES

  • Same room and exposure to the sun
  • Same type of vases
  • Same temperature of water
  • Cut from the same rose bush
  • Same amount of flowers

THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE IS THAT ONE GROUP OF FLOWERS GETS SPRAYED WITH HAIRSPRAY AND ONE GROUP DOES NOT.

THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE IS THE FRESHNESS OF THE BOUQUETS.

MATERIALS

  • Pantene hairspray
  • 6 white roses (same length)
  • Two vases
  • Same temperature water
  • Scissors

PROCEDURES

  • Cut 6 identical white roses from rose bush
  • Cut 6cm off of each stem with the scissors
  • Equally split flowers in two of the same vases
  • Fill up the same temperature water in both vases (exactly 500ml of water in each vase)
  • Spray three flowers with hairspray 17 centimeters away for 5 seconds and place the hairsprayed flowers in the experimental vase
  • Place the normal flowers in the control vase and set both in the same room

PROCEDURES CONTINUED:

7. Let sit bouquets sit for 7 days. Respray the experimental group with hairspray on Wednesday
8. Measure the length on the flowers to determine if the flowers have drooped
8. Take pictures of the flowers overall appearance and color with ruler In the vases
9. Count the number of petals that fell off the flowers
10. Repeat everyday at 4:00 for 7 days
