QUESTION

  • Does pink lemonade preserve flowers and keep them fresh?

HYPOTHESIS

  • If adding pink lemonade to flowers then it preserves their freshness longer than regular water does because the sugar feeds the flowers.

CONTROLLED VARIABLES

  • Same type and freshness of the flower
  • Each bowl is in identical location
  • The same volume of liquid
  • Temperature
  • Data collected same time

MATERIALS

  • I-pad
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 2 contains of the same capacity
  • 6 identical white roses
  • Water
  • Pink lemonade

PROCEDURE

  • 1) Obtain 6 identical white roses.
  • 2) Trim all stems to a length of 30cm.
  • 3) Divide the flowers into two identical groups, Experimental and Control.

  • 4) Pour 500 ml of water into a container and label it Control Group. Then add 400 ml of water plus 100ml of pink lemonade to the container clearly marked Experimental.
  • 5) Make sure they receive the same sunlight and temperature and take pictures every day.

PROCEDURE CONTINUED...

  • 6) Check the flowers every day at 7:20 pm.
  • 7) To count the number of petals that fall off you need to collect the petals and count them at the end.
  • 8) To measure the height of the flower in cm you need to use a measuring tape and measure up the flowers stem .

PROCEDURE CONTINUED...

  • 9) Smell the flowers from 10cm and inhale for 3 sec.
  • 10) Record any new observations.
  • 11) Examine the freshness of the petal.

  • 12) Look closely at the flower each day and examine the color changes in the petal.
  • 13) Repeat steps 6-12 daily at 7:20pm.

CHANGES FROM DAY 1-DAY 7

CONTROL GROUP DAYS 1,3,7 WITH THE MOST CHANGES.

EXPERIMENTAL GROUP DAYS 1,3,7 WITH THE MOST CHANGES

On day 5 I noticed the liquid in the Experimental Group dropped 100ml.

The stem on the Experimental flower is turning red from the pink lemonade.

Analysis:

At the end of the experiment my Experimental Group showed no difference in the changes of decomposing because the sugar did not help feed the flowers. I realized during the week both containers of the Experimental Group and the Control Group lost about 100ml of liquid that was used for the plant. Also, the Experimental Group had red stems dyed from the pink lemonade. I also could have put the flowers in a different location with more or less sunlight to see the changes between the experiments. If we had another week to continue the experiment I think the lab results would change because...

Analysis Continued:
I have continued to observe my flowers and the Control Group has died and looks terrible and lost petals while the Experimental Group is dead but is looking better than the Control Group. I think that the pink lemonade doesn’t preserve it that well but still helped the flowers, while the Control Group lasted a little bit longer but then died really fast.

Conclusion
My hypothesis was If adding pink lemonade to flowers then it preserves their freshness longer than regular water does. My conclusion does not agree with my hypothesis because the flowers in the experimental group also died and died first. In the beginning I thought they were both doing well but the Experimental group started wilting and turning brown. If this experiment was repeated I would change the pink lemonade to just normal lemonade because whatever the pink lemonade did besides turning the stem pink was not good. In addition I would continue this experiment for another week to collect more data. In all I’m glad I did this Experiment.
