"Flow" in Art Therapy

Empowering Immigrant Children with Adjustment Difficulties 

There have been much larger numbers of immigrants coming to the United States due to globalization.

Often times they face challenges in adjusting to the culture, especially children.

They Experience:

  • Difficulty engaging
  • Behavioral problems
  • Social, emotional distress
  • PTSD Symptoms
  • Difficulty Communicating

Resulting in:

  • Lower levels of happiness
  • Anxiety, confusion, helplessness
  • Physical restlessness
  • Inadequate social interactions
  • Disruptive behavior

Art has been seen to help immigrant children learn in the classroom and communicate with others.

The article studied the effect of "flow" which they defined as being completely engrossed in the art process.

Sampling

  • Korean American Family Service Center (KAFSC) located in New York
  • 3 Boys ages ranging from 7-11 years old
  • Immigrated from South Korea
  • Behavioral Problems, language barrier
  • Had some artistic interest or skill

  • Participants watched a video of their session and then did a post-session interview
  • Informal interviews
  • Previous case files
  • Journal entries and field notes

Anxiety and Fear

  • Participant 1: Dislocation of frequent moves once in the United States.
  • Participant 2: Frequent traveling to unfamiliar places.

Boredom and Social Interaction. Art served as an escape from boredom.
