What is it?

The flipped classroom is a model for teaching that moves most of the direct instruction outside of the classroom through video or some other form of instruction.

This frees up class time for differentiated learning, one-on-one help for students that need it, collaboration with peers, and hands-on learning. It's also great for inquiry-based and project-based learning.

Wait...

Do you have to create videos?
Everybody freaks out when you talk about creating videos. At a recent presentation, I prepped teachers beforehand and let them know we would be making videos. However, when we got to that part, half the room walked out.

Flipping the classroom is not just about making videos, although it can be. It's about engaging students and freeing up class time to help them be creative and get hands-on.

The possibilities are endless...

Creating videos is great, but there are so many other tools you can use to flip your classroom, you are limiting yourself (and your students) if you only use video.

Curate Content

Other people work hard to make content that you can use.

So use it!

Video

Using other people's videos to introduce content is a great way to cut down on your own work in flipping your classroom.

For math, we have a great resource in Khan Academy. Also, check out PBS.org, History.com, National Geographic, Discovery websites.

Images

Images can display ideas and concepts as well. Don't get locked into thinking that you have to use a video to capture your students' attention.

Articles

Find interesting articles on the topic you are discussing, or news reports that are focused on the topic at hand.

Post a link to that article on your class site and have students respond, or bring responses to class.

Mothership

Where your content lives and your students visit
All your content has to have a home where students can access it at any time.

A learning management system is the best tool to use for this. There are many options to choose from: Edmodo, Schoology, Moodle, even your own blog (my preferred choice).

Make them do something...

Don't just show them something, make them do something with the media you present to them.

Discussions, group work, collaboration...

The at-home portion of your flipped classroom should be your starting point for the lesson.

let's take a look inside...
Let's look at a very crude demo of how you can use other people's content in a flipped classroom setting.

Another tool for interaction
There are other tools available for student interaction, many of which are free and can be accessed on any device.
