CHRISTIANITY

CHRISTIANITY BELIEFS

  • Believe that Jesus is son of God and that he rose from the dead
  • Believe in one God in three parts
  • Believe that Jesus was sent to save mankind from sin
  • Split into two major denominations: Catholics and Protestants
  • Believe that after death, souls go to heaven or hell

CHRISTIANITY SYMBOLS

  • Symbols include:
  • The crucifix, doves, the chi-rho, the fish,
  • alpha and omega, the cross, ashes, incense

CHRISTIANITY HISTORY

  • Jesus of Nazareth was a preacher
  • in the area around Jerusalem during
  • Roman occupation. After his death and
  • resurrection, Jesus' followers spread
  • his teachings into the rest of the world

BUDDHISM

BUDDHISM BELIEFS

  • There is no "personal god"
  • Nothing is fixed or permanent
  • Two main denominations:
  • Theravada and Mahayana

BUDDHISM HISTORY

  • 2,500 years old, started when Buddha, who was
  • born into privilege, but chose to become a monk
  • and adopt a harsh life of poverty after seeing a
  • decrepit old man. He chose life without luxury or
  • poverty. He became known as the "enlightened one"

JUDAISM

JUDAISM BELIEFS

  • Judaism is a tradition grounded in the religious, ethical,
  • and social laws as they are articulated in the Torah — the first
  • five books of the Jewish bible.

JUDAISM SYMBOLS

  • Sacred Texts: Tanakh is an acronym of Torah, Nevi'im, and Ketuvim
  • Torah is the name given to the first five books of their sacred script

JUDAISM HISTORY

  • 4,00 years old, originated in Canaan with
  • people know as Israelites. They were given
  • commandments by god to Moses on top
  • of Mount Sinai. It is traced back to their
  • ancestor, Abraham.

HINDUISM

HINDUISM BELIEFS

  • They believe in four gods:
  • Brahma, who has four heads, four arms, and a beard
  • Lakshmi, another four-armed goddess
  • Shiva, the creator of the universe
  • Vishnu, a blue humanoid god, who helps us out

HINDUISM HISTORY

  • It has no known founder, sculptures,
  • or set teachings.

SIKHISM

SIKHISM BELIEFS

  • Worship God and follow the teachings of the gurus:
  • Guru Nanak, Guru Angad, Guru Amar Das,
  • Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan, Guru Hargobind,
  • Guru Har Rai, Guru Harkrishan, Guru Tegh Bahadur,
  • and Guru Gobind Singh. They are revered kind of like the Pope

SIKHISM HISTORY

  • Sikhism is a progressive religion, well ahead
  • of its time. It was founded over 500 years ago
  • and is the fifth largest religion populously, in
  • the world today. They worship and remember God
  • at all times.

SIKHISM SYMBOLS

  • These items are worn and carried by Sikhs:
  • Kesh(long hair), dastar(turban), kangha(comb),
  • kara(steel bracelet), kaccha(white underwear),
  • kirpan(ceremonial sword)
  • They are strictly against idolism.
