GOBI

  • Notable in history as part of the Mongol Empire, and as the location of important cities along the Silk Road.
  • Measures over 1,600 km from southwest to northeast and 800 km from north to south.
  • A cold desert with frost and occasionally snow occurring on its dunes.
  • The Gobi had a long history of human habitation, mostly by nomadic peoples.
  • The Gobi Desert is expanding, mainly because of human activities such as deforestation.

SEA OF JAPAN

  • Has almost no tides due to nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean.
  • Fishing is the dominant economic activity in the region.
  • Was once a landlocked sea when the land bridge of East Asia existed.
  • The sea currents circulate in the counterclockwise direction.
  • Disagreement about when the name "Sea of Japan" became the international standard.

HIMALAYA MTS.

  • Home to the planet's highest peaks, including Mount Everest.
  • They cross five countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, China, and Pakistan
  • The Himalayan range encompasses about 15,000 glaciers,
  • In Hinduism, they have been personified as Himavat, the God of snow
  • Runs west-northwest to east-southeast, in an arc 2,400 kilometres long.

MEKONG RIVER

  • Length: 4,200 km (2,610 miles)
  • About 60 million people live in the Mekong River basin.
  • 1540: Antonio de Faria, was the first person from Europe to see the Mekong River.
  • Vietnamese people rely on it for almost half the water used to irrigate their crops.
  • Flows through China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar.
