PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Definition: Scars are areas of fibrous tissue that replace normal skin after injury. A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body. Scars are made of collagen which is why scars are harder and rougher than the rest of the skin on a body. Sometimes too much collagen can form and a keloid scar can form. Scarring is a natural part of the healing process.
Summary: Scarring is a natural, healthy reaction your body experiences after you get a cut from either an injury, surgery, or a skin problem. Scars indicate that your body is healing. Yet, sometimes scars can heal wrongly or they can cause a person to feel uncomfortable because their scar is not "cosmetically appealing" .
Prevention: If you are cut from some sort of injury and you want to prevent your cut from scarring badly, here is what you should do. The most important thing to do is to not interfere with the healing process, for example you should not pick at any blisters that form from your cut. You should always keep your cut covered with a bandaid until it has completely formed a scar.
Prevention Continued: When your cut has formed a scar, you should apply Vitamin E to your scar and massage it in to the newly formed skin at least once a day to break down the collagen in the scar so the scar doesn't turn into a keloid scar.
Symptoms/Warning Signs: In cases when the body produces too much collagen, scars can be raised. Raised scars are called hypertrophic scars or keloid scars. Both of these kinds of scars are more common in younger and dark-skinned people. Some scars can have a sunken or pitted appearance.
Causes: A scar results from the biological process of wound repair in the skin and other tissues of the body.
Background/Risk Factors: Scars are made of collagen which is why scars are harder and rougher than the rest of the skin on a body. Scars indicate that your body is healing. Yet, sometimes scars can heal wrongly or form keloid or sunken scars. They can cause a person to feel uncomfortable because their scar is not "cosmetically appealing" .
How to treat a scar (whether it's a badly healed scar of a newly healed scar):
THIS IS A SCAR THAT HAS HEALED BADLY AFTER A SURGERY
USE VITAMIN E, OR ANOTHER SKIN SOFTENER LIKE PETROLEUM
TAKE A DAB OF THE PETROLEUM ON YOUR FINGER TIP
Massage the petroleum into the scar to break up the collagen in the new skin
