  • Non-literal language
  • Can be used to tell jokes.
  • Can be used to make deep comparisons
  • Can help to create a visual experience.
  • Some examples are simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole.

Simile!

It's a comparison of two unlike things using like or as.

Simile Examples
"He's as happy as a pig in mud."
"I love you like a love song baby"
"Just own, the night, like the fourth of July."

Metaphor!

A comparison of two unlike things not using like or as.

Metaphor Examples

  • You're my kryptonite.
  • You are the thunder and I am the lightning.
  • My heart's a stereo, it only beats for you.
  • I feel so close to you right now, it's a forcefield.
  • You shoot me down, but I won't fall. I am titanium.

Personification

Giving a non-Human, human-like traits

Personification Examples

  • Boy you got my heartbeat running away.
  • Cause I get a thousand hugs, from ten thousand lightning bugs
  • My shadow's the only one who walks beside me.

Hyperbole

An extreme, non-literal, over-exaggeration

Hyperbole examples:
"My loneliness is killing me."
"Tonight, we are young, so let's set the world on fire."
