Simile
A comparison of two unlike things using like or as

Simile Example:
Speak Now by Taylor Swift
"Wearing a gown shaped like a pastry"
This is comparing a pastel dress with layers to a fancy pastry.

Metaphor
A comparison of two unlike things without using like or as

Metaphor Example:
One Thing by One Direction
"Shot me out of the sky your my kryptonite"
This compares kryptonite; the only thing that can defeat Superman, to his crush
that makes him feel nervous/weak when she's around.

Personification
Giving human characteristics to something not human

Personification Example:
Super Bass by Nicki Minaj
"Boy you got my heartbeat running away"
This lyric is comparing a heartbeat running away to somebody being in love and having their breath taken away cause they love the other person so much.

Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound in the first letter in at least two words

Alliteration Example:
Bad Blood by Taylor Swift
"And, baby, now we've got bad blood"
This shows an alliteration because baby, bad, and blood start with the same first letter.

Onomatopoeia
The word sounds like the sound it makes

Onomatopoeia Example:
Roar by Katy Perry
"Cause I am a champion, and your gonna hear me roar"
This lyric means that they love the feeling of winning and and are gonna scream really loud like a lion if they do. Roar is an onomatopoeia because it is the actual sound a lion makes.

Hyperbole
An exaggeration

Hyperbole Example:
A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton
"Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles if I could just see you tonight"
This lyric expresses a person's undying love. They would not actually walk a thousand miles, it just helps show the immense amount of love they have for another person.

Repetition
Repeating a word or phrase for emphasis

Repetition Example:
Happy by Pharrell Williams
"Because I am happy, Because I am happy, Because I am happy"
This lyric repeats over and over again which makes it repetition.
