Simile
The comparison of two or more words using like or as
Example: She's like a shining star

Metaphor
The comparison of two or more things not using like or as
Example: life is a rollercoster

Idiom
A group of words comparing unlike things that are not meant to be taken literally
Example: give a big hand

Alliteration
A group of words that start with the same letter or sound at the begining
Example: Sally sells shea shells

Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement or claim not meant to be taken literally like, I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

Personification
Making something not human have human feelings like, opportunity knocks.

Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like sound it makes, like BOOM.
