simile

compares two things using the words "like" or "as"

metaphor

personification

giving human qualities to objects, ideas, or animals

alliteration

repeating constant sounds

onomatopoeia

imagery

words or phrases that appeal to physical senses

symbolism

a person, place, or object that stands for something else

irony

surprise difference between what happens and what is expected to happen
