HYPERBOLE

  • An extreme exaggeration
  • Ex.) I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

PUN

  • A funny way to use a word to emphasize its different meaning
  • Ex.) I used to be afraid of boats, but that ship sailed

ALLITERATION

  • The occurance of the same letter or sound at the beginning of close words
  • Ex.) Kim's kids kept kiting

ASSONANCE

  • When word has the same vowel sounds but different consonants at the begining
  • Ex.) Men sell wedding bells

ONOMATOPOEIA

  • Word that imitate their sounds
  • Ex.) buzz or hiss

OXYMORON

  • When two contradictory terms are next to eachother
  • Ex.) civil war

PERSONIFICATION

  • Giving human qualities to animals or inanimate object
  • Ex.) The stars danced in the moonlit sky

CLICHÉ

  • An overused expression
  • Ex.) Think outside the box

METAPHOR

  • A figure of speech containing a comparasin
  • Ex.) The room is a dark cave

SIMILE

  • A comparison using like or as to describe something
  • Ex.) Her hair is like silk

EUPHEMISM

  • An indirect expression that otherwise would be blunt
  • Ex.) He passed away

PROVERBS

  • Stating a general truth or advice
  • Ex.) Silence has so much meaning

IDIOMS

  • An expression that cannot be understood by the meaning of its words
  • Ex.) Raining cats and dogs

CONSONANCE

  • Compatability between opinions or actions
  • Ex.) Pitter-Patter
