Figurative Language

Simile
A simile is a comparison of two (or more) unlike things using the words like or as. Ex: He's as fast as a cheetah.

Metaphor
A metaphor is a comparison of two or more unlike things without using like or as. It usually uses the words is or as. Ex: He is a giraffe.

Idiom
An idiom is a phrase or expression which means something different from what the words actually say. Ex: He has a green thumb.

Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds in two or more neighboring words. Ex: Lilly Licks Lolli Pops.

Hyperbole
A hyperbole is a figure of speech using exaggeration . Ex: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse.

Personification
Personification is giving a non-human thing, (plant, animal, etc.) human traits. (Qualities, feelings, and or characteristics.) Ex: The wind softly whispered in the night.

Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is the use of words that sound like the noise they name. Ex: Boom! Crackle! Pop!
