Fiction

A PIECE OF WRITING THAT COMES FROM THE AUTHOR’S IMAGINATION; NOT TRUE, BUT CAN BE realistic

Short story

Meant to be read in one sitting, usually involving one main idea

Novel

  • longer
  • more storylines
  • fictional

Characters

Characters are people, animals, imaginary creatures, etc. in a piece of literature

THERE are 4 main types of characters

  • round - main character
  • flat - minor character
  • Dynamic - {gradually} changes by the end of the story
  • static - doesn’t change much/at all

Foreshadow

Clues or hints to what will happen later in the story

symbol: A concrete object used by the author to represent a certain idea

Theme: the moral of the story

unlocking theme

  • was the main character static or dynamic?
  • if dynamic, then what did they learn?
  • skim for key phrases and sentences
  • does the title have an important meaning that can lead you to the theme?
