WHAT IS FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER(FASD)?

  • FASDs are a group of conditions that can occur in a person whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy.
  • The effects include physical problems and problems with learning and behaving.
  • Someone with an FASD has a mixture of problems.

CAUSES

  • One cause:
  • Alcohol consumption by mother during pregnancy
  • Alcohol crosses with the baby's blood
  • Alcohol causes brain damage to the child

PREVENTION

  • There is a simple way to avoid FASD
  • Mother must completely avoid alcohol
  • No alcohol should be consumed while pregnant

WARNING SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

  • Abnormal facial features
  • Small head
  • Shorter than average height
  • Low body weight
  • Poor coordination

WARNING SIGNS/SYMPTOMS(CONT.)

  • Hyperactive behavior
  • Difficulty with attention
  • Poor memory
  • Learning disabilities
  • Speech/language delays

WARNING SIGNS/SYMPTOMS(CONT.)

  • Low IQ
  • Poor reasoning/judgement skills
  • Sleep and sucking problems as a baby
  • Vision or hearing problems
  • Problems with the heart, kidney or bones.

TREATMENT

  • No cure but can be improved
  • Personal counseling can help
  • Early learning opportunities
  • Diagnosed before age 6
  • Live in a stable home

TREATMENT(CONT.)

  • Never experience violence against themselves
  • Stay in each living situation 2.8 years
  • Good quality home from ages 8 to 12
  • Apply for development disability services
  • Have their basic needs met.

  • Be patient
  • Be understanding
  • Be repetitive
  • Be supportive
  • Be helpful

THE SCIENCE BEHIND FASD

  • Baby's develop all throughout pregnancy
  • Alcohol damages the brain
  • The current growth of the baby's brain is hurt

STATISTICS

  • 7.6% of pregnant women (or 1 in 13) reported drinking alcohol in the past 30 days.
  • More than 1 in 5 pregnant women report alcohol use in the first trimester.
  • 1 in 14 pregnant women in their second trimester report alcohol abuse.
  • 1 in 20 pregnant women in their third trimester report alcohol abuse.
  • 1 in 9 pregnant women binge drinks in the first 3 months of her pregnancy.

MYTHS AND FACTS

  • FASD affects people of all ages, not just children.
  • The behavioral problems come from brain damage, not bad parenting.
  • If a mother has FASD it doesn't mean the baby will.

IMPORTANT/INTERESTING FACTS

  • One drink of alcohol while pregnant is equal to 30 bottles of alcohol to your baby.
  • 40,000 babies are born with FASD every year
  • 90% of FASD individuals do not live with their biological parents
  • FASD is more common than autism and Down syndrome put together.
