Comparing "The Crucible" to...
The Ferguson Protests

The article titled "How the Rest of the World Reacted to the Ferguson Verdict" focuses on the protests and riots that broke out after Darren Wilson (a police officer) was found not guilty for shooting Michael Brown.

I chose this article to analyze because the Ferguson shooting and it's protests have been all over the news lately, and the lines between which man (Wilson or Brown) is guilty is very blurred.

Themes
Lies and Deceit

🔹In "The Crucible", many of the characters are lying to each other or to themselves about witchcraft, and if anyone is really guilty of it.
🔹At the scene of the Ferguson shooting, many bystanders say Brown lifted his hands up in surrender but Wilson shot him any way. Others say Brown tried to grab the gun from Wilson. I personally do not know which side is true, but from the very different claims mentioned it can be concluded that one of them is either totally untrue, or over exaggerated.

Themes
Respect

🔹In Salem (during the time of "The Crucible"), it was very important to respect those of higher authority. Although throughout play, as well as the real life event, people often called authority into question and people were turning against each other.
🔹As a result of the Ferguson verdict, supporters of Brown started various riots and protests. The point of these protests was to undermine authority and to push cops to their limits, all because of one cop who may or may not have been telling the truth.
