Fashion

Using the ELements and Principles of Design

Elements of Design

  • Space
  • Shape/Form
  • Line
  • Texture
  • Pattern
  • Color

There are 4 Basic
Silhouettes
-compare shoulders, waist and hips to create shapes.

Space- the human body the designer has to work with.

Shape/form- how each human body is different and needs different styled clothes to fit.

Designers design a clothing item based on the 4 basic silhouettes so they fit.

Rectangle= Same width of shoulders, waist and hip

Hourglass= Shoulders and hips the same with the waist dipping in the middle.

Triangle= Wider hips, skinner shoulders with the waist in the middle

Inverted Triangle= Wider shoulders, skinner hips with the waist in the middle

If a triangle-shaped person tried to wear a clothing item designed for an inverted triangle they would have lots of issues.

Line in fashion has two types. Structural and decorative.

Structural actually builds the garment.

Decorative are just there to add interest.

Structural: Makes the clothes

Structural actually builds the garment.

Decorative are just there to add interest.

Decorative: Adds interest not is not required

Structural actually builds the garment.

Decorative are just there to add interest.

The satin sashes are decorative forming diagonal and horizontal lines.
The darts are structural forming vertical lines.

Darts help form the 3D garment from the 2D fabric.

Remember there are different illusions created by different lines.

Vertical- adds height
Horizontal adds width
Diagonal- adds movement
Curved- adds interest/playfulness

Lines are often in fashion used to accentuate a body feature.

Vertical Lines

Add Height or are slimming

Horizontal Lines

Add width or emphasis

Texture- comfortableness and interest

People choose clothing that is comfortable so rough or hard textures are often avoided.

Accessories on the other hand can be various textures.

Texture can make the item more interesting.

Texture can also add illusions like being slimmer or fuller.

Tactile VS Visual

Tactile texture: You can feel it. The ribs you can feel the difference.

Visual: you can only see it. Printed patterns are visual

Tactile you can touch

So it doesn't become overwhelming

COlor

 Has the most impact
Color causes illusions and can affect moods.
Be careful that the colors match and go with your skin/hair.

Cool colors and darker values are more refined and can seem more professional. They also can be used to look slimmer.

Warm colors and lighter values are more playful, dramatic, draw attention, and can be romantic. They can have the illusion of shorter and heavier.

Principles of Design

  • Balance
  • Rhythm
  • Proportion
  • Scale
  • Emphais
  • Harmony

Asymmetry VS Symmetry

Balance- equal visual weight on all sides.

The human body is symmetrical so symmetrical clothes are more formal/professional.

Symmetrical is exactly the same on both sides.

Asymmetrical has differences.

Asymmetrical is a little more spontaneous and fun. Draws attention to details.

Rhythm draws the eyes around the outfit

Rhythm is what ties the different parts of the outfit together.

The degree of change must be SMALL or a jumpy, choppy effect will result.

Repeating colors or designs or patterns in different parts draws the eye around.

5 Types of Rhythm

  • Repetition
  • Gradiation
  • Opposition
  • Radiation
  • Transition

What kinds of Rythm?

Proportion- Draw an imaginary line and compare one side to the rest of the design

2:3 is the golden mean

Try to keep the items in scale or it will be overwhelming

Scale compares one item to another.

In fashion that is the item compared to the person wearing it.

If you are not careful the outcome could end up clownish

Make sure the clothes are the right size.

Make sure the clothes are the right size.

Emphasis is the focal point of the outfit. The centerpiece if you will.

Make sure you don't have too many things as it can make the outfit chaotic and not coordinated.
