FAMOUS ASTRONOMERS

Aristotle

  • He lived from 384 B.C to 322 B.C. He was a greek philosopher
  • Aristotle used many methods to prove the earth is a sphere
  • Came up with the geocentric view of the solar system

ARISTARCHUS

  • Born 310 BCE and died 230 BCE
  • He proved that the earth's diameter is twice the diameter of the moon
  • Tried to measure distance to moon and sun

PTOLEMY

  • Lived 90 AD to 168 AD
  • He developed the theory that the earth centered universe
  • Tried to explain the retrograde motion of planets
  • He observed that planets moved backwards in the sky

GEOCENTRIC MODEL OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

  • Earth is the center of all planets in this theory

NICOLAUS COPERNICUS

  • Lived from 1473-1543
  • Deceloped the first detailed heliocentric model of the solar system
  • He said that they moved in perfect circles around the sun

HELIOCENTRIC MODEL OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM

  • The sun is the center of all of the planets in this theory

JOHANENES KEPLER

  • Lived from 1571-1630
  • He proposed the Kepler Laws

GALILEO GALILEI

  • Lived from 1564-1642
  • He made signifigant improvements to the newly invented telescope
  • With his new telescope he observed the moons orbiting jupiter.

ISAAC NEWTON

  • Lived from 1643-1727
  • He discovered the law of gravity to make the helio and geo metric models possible

EDWIN HUBBLE

  • Lived from 1864-1934
  • He was able to present evidence for the expansion of the universe
