BACKGROUND

  • Soviet Union born in 1917.
  • First leader was Vladimir Lenin.
  • Purpose: "A society of true democracy"
  • It was actually communist.
  • In 1948 Russia blockaded Berlin.
  • U.S. sent food and supplies called the Berlin Airlift
  • WAR HAD BEGUN.

USSR IN WWII

  • During WWII Joseph Stalin was dictator.
  • He created a totalitarian government.
  • In 1939 Stalin joins Hitler and Axis powers.

  • USSR joins United States and Allies.
  • ALLY VICTORY!
  • Joseph Stalin dies in 1953

COLD WAR IN 50s

  • USSR tests first atomic bomb.
  • USSR sends troops to Afghanistan.
  • USSR becomes allies with U.S. enemies: N.Korea, Vietnam, China.

COLD WAR IN 60s

  • Soviet Union shoots down U.S. plane in USSR territory.
  • Soviets threaten U.S. with missiles.
  • In response United States blockades Cuba and sends troops to Vietnam.
  • Soviets build Berlin Wall and test more nuclear bombs.

  • United States and Soviet Union sign Nuclear Treaty to calm tension.
  • Soviet Union boycotts World Cup soccer match against Chile.
  • September 11, 1971 Dictator of USSR Nikita Khrushchev dies.
  • Soviet Union sets up communism in Afghanistan.
  • December 24, 1979 Soviet Union invades Afghanistan.

COLD WAR IN 80S

  • United States boycott 1980 Summer Olympics in Russia.
  • Soviet Union and Allies boycott 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
  • Soviets continue to test nuclear bombs.
  • Soviet power plant explodes.
  • Soviet rooms leave Afghanistan.
