FACTORS

There are many different factors that affect climate around the world. It is the varying influence of these factors that lead to different parts of the Earth experiencing differing climates

CLIMATE

The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

• Elevation/Altitude

Latitude

The further you move away from the equator, north or south, the cooler the temperature.

This is because the sun's rays are dispersed over a larger area of land as you move away from the equator.

As latitude increases, the average yearly temperature decreases

Elevation

The higher it is from sea level the cooler the temperature. As elevation increases, the air becomes less dense.

Less dense air cannot hold as much heat as dense air, meaning as elevation increases, temperature decreases.

PROXIMITY OF WATER

Large bodies of water have moderating effect on temperature

Water is slower to warm or cool than landforms

Prevailing Wind

Air masses carry the conditions from where they originate

It determines the windward and leeward direction sides of both mountain ranges and large bodies of water

LANDMASS

Location near the landmass tend to have wide ranges in temperatures

Both between day and night occassionally
