PRESENTATION OUTLINE

BALEARIC ISLAND CAVE GOAT

  • Was a species of goat that lived on the Islands of Majorca and Minorca.
  • It went extinct around 5000 years ago.
  • It was more closely related to sheep than it was to goats.
  • There eyes were not directed towards the side like most herbivore mammals.
  • Instead there eyes are directed forwards giving them better depth perception.

EVOLUTION

  • This goat did not have eyes facing out because the islands it lived on they had no natural predators.
  • It having no predators to worry about meant it lost its natural fear of predation.
  • Also it had short legs because it didn't have to worry about escaping predators.
  • The goats also became small because they were on an island which has limited space and vegetation.
  • It was a browser instead of a grazer like modern goats.
