O’Connor starts off by having Hulga’s original name Joy Hopewell. Her name is a case of verbal irony; it contradicts the very being of her nature. Hulga did not execute signs of joy; she was very cynical about her surroundings. Hulga thought she was smarter and above everyone else because community.ad a “weak heart” and “might see forty-five”.
