Melted Chocolate

  • It is a physical change.
  • It is reversible by cooling.
  • Solid to liquid.
Melted chocolate is a physical change because it has only changed form and not created a new substance. It is reversible by cooling but it won't be the same shape. It will take the shape of it's container. The chocolate started as a solid chocolate block and changed to liquid melted chocolate. This change occurred by heating.

Burning Candle (wax)

  • It is a physical change.
  • It is reversible.
  • Solid to liquid (wax).
A burning candle is a physical change because the wax can be returned to a solid by cooling and it hasn't created a new substance. It is reversible by cooling. The wax started as solid wax and change to liquid wax. This change occurred by heating.

Berocca and Water

  • It is a chemical change.
  • It is irreversible.
  • Solid to liquid (tablet).
Berocca dissolving in water is a chemical change because a new substance has been formed. It is irreversible because it is a chemical change. The tablet starts as a solid and transforms into a liquid. This change occurred by mixing two substances together.

Melted Ice Block

  • Physical change.
  • Reversible by freezing.
  • Solid to liquid.
A melted ice block is a physical change because the ice block has only changed form and not created a new substance. It is reversible by freezing. The ice block started as a solid and changed into a liquid ice block. This change occurred by heat.

Burnt Chocolate

  • Chemical change.
  • Irreversible.
  • Liquid to solid (charcoal).
Burning chocolate is a chemical change because a new substance has been formed which is charcoal. It is irreversible because it is a chemical change. The chocolate started as liquid chocolate and changed into solid charcoal. This change occurred by too much heat.

Frozen Milk

  • Physical change.
  • Reversible by heating.
  • Liquid to solid.
Freezing milk is a physical change because the milk has only changed form and not created a new substance. It is reversible by heating or just leaving it in a fridge to thaw. The milk started as a liquid and changed into a solid. This changed occured by freezing.

Salty Water

  • Physical change.
  • Reversible by heating.
  • Solid to liquid (salt).
Salt mixed in water is a physical change because it is reversible. It is reversible by heating the salty water in a saucepan. The water started as solid salt and changed into a liquid. This change occurred by mixing two substances together.

Water, Bicarbonate of Soda and Citric Acid.

  • Chemical change.
  • Irreversible.
  • Solid to liquid.
Mixing water, bicarbonate of soda and citric acid is a chemical change because you cannot change it back into it's natural form and it made a new substance when you mix it. It is irreversible because it is a chemical change. It started as a solid and changes into a liquid. This change occurred by mixing.

Spilt Vinegar

  • Physical change.
  • It is reversible by condensing.
  • Liquid to gas.
Spilt vinegar is a physical change because it is reversible. It is reversible by trapping the vinegar into a condenser and it will go back into it's natural form. The vinegar started as liquid vinegar and changed into a gas when it evaporated into the atmosphere.

Theory

  • We found it at 11:30am.
  • At least 10 minutes.
We found the Mess when we walked in from first break at 11:30. I think that it had been there for at least 10 minutes because the chocolate was started to become hard and the Berocca wasn't fizzing.
