Journey began in 1831, when he was invited to sail on the HMS Beagle's five year voyage along the route. He planned to collect specimens of plants and animals, naturalist and scientist from England. His theory explains how modern organisms evolved over millions of years.

Began in 1831, Darwin planned to collect specimens of plants and animals, No one knew this would be one of the most important scientific voyages in history, because the Beagle trip led Darwin to develop what has been called the single best idea anyone has ever had.

Adaption- Any heritable trait that helps an organism survive in its environment
Fitness- describes how well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment

Variations help a species survive when the environment changes. In dry years, there were not enough small seeds for all of the finches. Finches with larger beaks were able to break open larger seeds.

Disruptive- Occurs when the extreme trait values over the intermediate trait values
Stabilizing- Occurs when selection favors the intermediate trait value over the extreme values

Hutton- Described how geological processes shape the land
Lyell- Argued that the laws of nature do not change over time
Lamarck- Proposed that all organisms are born with a desire to become better
Malthus- Thought that overcrowding led to conditions that would slow down population growth
