GERMANY INVADES POLAND

  • September 1st, 1939
  • Poland
  • The German army destroyed the Polish forces and began to take over.
  • They used a method called blitzkrieg which they used in the future.

LEND-LEASE ACT

  • March 11, 1941
  • U.S.
  • The U.S transferred defense materials to foreign nations for free.
  • It allowed the British to keep fighting until America joined the war.

BATTLE OF MIDWAY

  • June 4, 1941
  • Midway Island (Pacific Ocean)
  • U.S defeats Japan in one of the most important naval battles
  • We destroyed Japanese aircraft carries, then putting us in a different position.

PEARL HARBOR

  • December 7, 1941
  • Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
  • Japan launches a surprise air attack on U.S. Naval base.
  • After the attack, U.S. entered the war.

BATTLE OF GUADALCANAL

  • August, 1942 - Feb, 1943
  • Solomon Islands, Pacific theater
  • The first major battle and huge victory for the allies.
  • The turning point of the pacific war and allowed the U.S. To secure air superiority.

D-DAY

  • June 6, 1944
  • Normandy, France
  • We landed in Normandy and began freed places occupied by Nazis.
  • Largest and most dangerous amphibious military operation in history.

YALTA CONFERENCE

  • Febuary, 1945
  • Yalta, Crimean Peninsula
  • Prime minister, Soviet leader, and U.S. president meet to make plans and demand Germany's surrender.
  • Stalin (soviet) agreed to permit free elections in Eastern Europe and to enter war against Japan.

IWO JIMA

  • Feb 19, 1945
  • Iwo Jima, Japan
  • Three U.S. Marine divisions landed on the island, they wiped out the defending forces.
  • Japanese fought from caves, dugouts, tunnels, etc. Famous U.S. victory photo taken there.

ALLIES CAPTURE BERLIN

  • July 11, 1945
  • West Berlin
  • Soviets handed over control of West Berlin to American and British forces.
  • The divided city became a symbol of the Cold War that lasted the next 44 years.

ATOMIC BOMBS ON HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI

  • August 6 & 9, 1945
  • Hiroshima & Nagasaki, Japan
  • U.S. drops 2 atomic bombs, killing a total of 120,000 people instantly.
  • Japan surrendered, closely followed by Germany.

NUREMBERG TRIALS

  • November 20, 1945
  • Nuremberg, Germany
  • Nazi war criminals were put to justice and brought to trial.
  • It was an important stepping stone toward establishing a permanent international court.

TOKYO TRIALS

  • November 4 & December 23, 1948
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • 25 Japanese defendants found guilty of war crimes, 7 receive death penalty.
  • 25 out of 28 were convicted and either hung or imprisoned.
