GOVERNMENT

  • Head of government:Taoiseach
  • Deputy Prime Minister:Tanaiste
  • Taoiseach and Ministers form the government under the Irish constitution
  • They also hold a executive power and they are Parliamentary Democracy

GOVERNMENT

  • Parliament is called Oireachtas
  • There are two houses of Parliament (House of representatives)
  • Seanad Éireann (Senate)
  • Parliament has 166 members of Teachtaí Dála (TD)
  • In which they are elected using (PR-STV)

GOVERNMENT

  • Proportional representation with a single transferrable vote (PR-STV)
  • Elections last about five years
  • The current government is a coalition between Fine Gael and Labour
  • The second main political parties represented in the Dàil are Fianna Fàil and Sinn Féin
  • The Seanad has 60 members and 11 of those 60 are nominated by the Taoiseach

  • There are 114 authorities in Ireland.
  • They provide a wide range in services including
  • Housing,Transport,water supply,watse mangement,education,health and welfare

EDUCATION

  • Education is free at all levels and colleges.
  • They have three levels of education primary,secondary,and third level.
  • Children must have education from the ages 5 to 16
  • Children at the age of 18 must have three years of post-primary education.
  • Pre-school is optional.

  • All of Pre-school is free prior to this being the year before you start primary school
  • It is compulsory for children ages from 6 to 16 get three years of secondary education

MONEY SYSTEM

  • Not until 1 January 2002 that the state started to withdraw Irish pound coins and notes
  • The euro became the currency of the eurozone countries like Ireland on 1 January 1999
  • Euros can be 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents
  • Evey single euro coin carries a well known European face.
  • Irish coins they have a harp as their symbol

  • Bram Stoker (1847-1912) : best known as the author of the Novel Dracula
  • Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) : best known for his novel Gulliver's Travels.
