eu·phe·mism
ˈyo͞ofəˌmizəm
(noun)
a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.
It's pretty much a figure of speech used in place of saying inappropriate or to avoid a touchy subject
In literature, euphemisms can be used to make clever or hidden references that only older audiences will understand
It can also used to refrain from directly talking about a socially taboo subject such as sex or death
Examples of euphemisms include pass away (die), lay someone off (fire someone), and all about that bass (all about that butt).
It's just a prettier way of saying something ugly
In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden uses the euphemism "giving her the time" when he refers to Stradlater having sex with a girl
